Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), also known as intracranial injuries, happen when an external force causes traumatic injury to the brain. Head injuries from car accidents, falls and violence are some major causes of this catastrophic injury. A new paper published January 30, 2014 on MedicalExpress.com shines a light on the devastating effects of traumatic brain injury (“TBI”). An estimated 10 million people a year suffer a traumatic brain injury. In the U.S. alone, the cost of traumatic brain injury is estimated to exceed $60 billion per year, with disability costs outweighing medical costs by four times.
New scientific evidence suggests that even brain injuries once considered minor can create significant symptoms and disability. In addition, recent epidemiologic data indicates that those who suffer a traumatic brain injury are at significantly higher risk of developing dementia later in life. Thus, the emerging scientific consensus is that no brain injury is a “mild” brain injury.
The effects of a TBI are often permanent. In many cases, costly rehabilitation in the form of speech, recreational, occupational or physical therapy may be required. In more severe cases the result may be death of the victim. The aftermath of any of these scenarios can be overwhelming for the victim or the survivors of the victim. Types of TBI and Treatments
- Concussion. This is the least severe type of TBI, and is often a short-term injury that does not damage the brain tissue.
- Skull fracture. There are different types of skull fractures. The most serious kinds are those that damage the brain tissue.
- Contusion. This is an area of swollen brain tissue and blood from broken blood vessels due to a skull fracture.
- Contrecoup. A contusion injury caused by the brain shaking back and forth in the skull.
- Diffuse axonal injury. Diffuse axonal injury or shearing caused by contrecoup. This affects individual neurons and communication between them.
- Hematoma. Heavy bleeding in or around the brain. There are different types of hematoma that cause brain damage, classified by where the bleeding is.
- Anoxia. The result when oxygen supply to the brain is cut off or reduced.
Treatments for TBI vary based on the type and severity, but they include rest, rehabilitation (through physical therapy, speech therapy, etc.), surgery, and/or medication.
Causes of TBI
Traumatic brain injuries are caused by some kind of external force. The most common causes of TBI are motor vehicle crashes, falls, sports and recreational activities, workplace accidents, defective products, lightning, electric shocks, violence and blows to the head.
The injury to the brain generally occurs when:
- A severe jolt makes brain move back and forth in skull.
- Cellular brain structures are torn because of jolt or blow.
- An object entering into the skull causes tissue and bleeding damage.
- Bleeding around the brain disrupts the oxygen supply.
Types of Compensation Available for TBI Victims
Traumatic brain injuries can be physically and financially devastating, leading to exorbitant medical expenses and requiring rehabilitation and sometimes long-term care. Those who suffer TBIs may not be able to hold the job they held before, and perhaps the injury will be a long-term injury that affects their quality of life permanently.
